Health insurance in Canada: What
you need to know

family health care and insurance concept

What is health insurance?

Personal health insurance (also known as private health insurance) is coverage that can help Canadian residents cover the cost of preventive care or medical bills due to an illness. It can help pay for several health-related expenses, including:

  • Prescription drugs to treat a chronic or serious health condition

  • Dental care such as teeth cleanings, braces, dentures and crowns

  • Vision-care needs such as eye exams and prescription glasses

  • Emergency travel medical services when you travel to another country

  • Physiotherapy to help with injury recovery

  • Medical equipment to help with your mobility

  • Private/semi private hospital room stays

This insurance is most often used by people who are

  • Retired

  • Self-employed

  • Not eligible for group benefits

  • Losing their previous group benefits coverage.

It’s similar to group benefits because it helps pay for things provincial/territorial health care plans may not cover.

There are plans that suit your needs and budget. Coverage is guaranteed for some plans and you can even qualify with pre-existing medical conditions.

Why do we need personal health insurance?

Provincial and territorial health plans in Canada provide coverage for certain health expenses, but they generally won’t pay for all your medical bills. In some cases, you may not get any coverage at all, and may have to pay out-of-pocket for various health-care costs.

With personal health insurance, you’ll get reimbursed for eligible health expenses. This can include medical, dental, vision and other health-care expenses that aren’t fully covered (or covered at all) by your government healthcare plan.

What Is a Group Health Insurance Plan?

Group Insurance health plans provide coverage to a group of members, usually comprised of company employees or members of an organization.

  • Group members receive insurance at a reduced cost because the insurer’s risk is spread across a group of policyholders.

  • Plans usually require at least 70% participation in the plan to be valid.

  • Premiums are split between the organization and its members, and coverage may be extended to members' families and/or other dependents for an extra cost.

  • Employers can enjoy favorable tax benefits for offering group health insurance to their employees.
